Otter Wax
Our friend Chris Chase recently introduced us to Otter Wax, an all natural, organically based product for waterproofing fabrics. Otterwax is made entirely of natural plant based waxes and oils. It’s non-toxic, and does not contain paraffin, silicone, CFCs (like most spray-on water repellents) or any other synthetic materials. You can just rub it on cold for a weathered, distressed look, or continue to settle wax into the fabric with a hair dryer/heat gun for a more even application.
Complete DIY instructions for waterproofing canvas, denim, poly & nylon fabrics, and leather products available from Otterwax.com.
Sold per bar. One bar (2.25 ounce) will treat about 2-3 square yards of fabric depending on the thickness of the layer applied and the weave of fabric. Coarser weaves absorb more wax, while tighter weaves will absorb less. For accessories (bags, backpacks, etc) use one bar. For larger items (jeans, jackets, etc), use two bars.
Otterwax is proudly handmade in Portland, Oregon.
